Some of the tracks do not work because links to tracks only stay up for a week or two. So, check in often and get the music.

Alternatively, “Father Christmas” aka Santa Claus just might come bearing huge gifts this year.

In the meantime, here is Mpongo Love.

Mpongo Love

East African rhumba circa 1970/1980 Mpongo Love – Ndaya

This is what a ballad is all about.

Quite a number of your musical links can not play. They say that url not found. I really want to listen to the DDC milimani song Sauda. Remember Papii Kocha and his song Fanta? do you by any chance have it? But thanks for the great job you have done with the deep cultural resource that was and is African Music

It’s good to know that you’re as young as “You Can Do It” and you can appreciate the wonderful music from the Golden Seventies which your folks and elder brothers in East Africa loved. Mine is a wish. Could you please post Franco’s “Nakoma Mbanda Ya Mama Na Mobali Na Ngai”.
And if you ever get hold of Orchestre Les Kamale’s “Ngali”, let us have it. Those of us who were teenagers in the 1970s will tell you it’s one of the hottest grooves ever to come out of the Congo Forests. And thanks for all those Mbaraka Mwinshehe tunes. More please?

M’Ntwiga, I would like to request GEMA songs. Something tells me you have a few kinandas up your sleeve. Are you saving the best for last. Throw in at least one wandidi per post if you know what I mean. The western Kenya songs are okay.

Thanks.

Thanks for a great post……..Pitie!. I also enjoyed ‘Lift kwa Jirani’ by Les Wanyika. I believe the group was East Africa’s top band ever!

You will find that others in this post asked for Infidelite Mado and that the track is up.

I have to stop. I know there were a ton more requests. But I have to go catch some zzzzzzssssss.

Can I do another request special next week to catch some of them so that I can get on to regularly scheduled programming for now?

Today’s tracks

Here we go.

First up, Sunburst. Does anyone know anything about these guys?

Sunburst – Simba anaguruma pt. 1
Sunburst – Simba anaguruma pt. 2

They have this Manu Dibango-esque sound that I just really like.

Next on the playlist.

Vijana Jazz Band

Vijana Jazz Band – Niliruka Ukuta

In Closing

I have GOT to finish this up with some deep house and some tracks that I am really digging.

This week, in the deep house front, it is a seriously kicking mix that I have been listening to from our local boys over at deeper.co.za who are in my opinion one of the definitive sources for this sound worldwide. They never leave my playlist. Period.

Here is That sound,

Watch out for the track Justify by M+S Presents The Girl Next Door starting about 1hr 8m 34 s into the set. This “pedal to the metal” sound – that you can also find on the track Original by Soha (listen to it starting at about 41m 25s on December Mix at demizen.com) is what it’s all about!

Want more?

Then try this mix, Ah so deep, from the now sadly defunct afrobeat.co.za. Start listening at about 18m 05s.

Bonus tracks for those who dared to tread thus far.

From the Jackie Brown OST, here is Bill Withers Who Is He And What Is He To You

do you know what that number reminds me of?

Guess!!!

It reminds me of the soundtrack to many a Friday night of my past – something like a phenomenon, something like a phenomenon, something like a phenomenon.

And I am out.

See you soon.

Finally, if you are new to the site or trying to figure out how to do something, please read this post.

Hey, if you want the Franco track requested, I can send it (and/or the rest of the CD) to you. I certainly owe you far more than that for all the great music.

Hi Steve. I’m not a frequent commantator, though I visit your blog at least once a week. Today is just to give you an answer to your question about Sunburst, but probably not the one you expected : check at sunburst.web.free.fr which is one of the first replies I got from Google (probably because I live in France). Anyway, thank you for the great music you post.

Hii ni mara ya kwanza ya kupata blog yako, na kweli nime changaa- incredible! It’s like tuning in to VoK, as it used to be.

So asanteni from a displaced Kenya (even a zungu one at that), currently in Mongolia.

Let me ask you- do you know a song (circa 1994)which had a chorus that went “we ni uselessi- we ni callboxi- you are used by everybody…” Main lyrics were not in Swa, but in something else. does this ring any bells?

    Asante mara ingine,

    M’Ntwiga,
Vancouver City is like Kabece or Igoji town – no “Bolingo ya telephone”. Nostalgie of the Maisha’ni afya days with Job Izaaka Mwamto and Beautiful Ben Murithi – days are gone but not the music they palyed like “Lumumba ya mama” etc.
    Get us connected.

Thanks Ntwige to post Simba Anaunguruma by Sunburst, one of the bands that struggled to introduce Afro-Rock in rumba splashed East Africa.

The band’s figure head was James Mpungo why the fuzzed guitar was played by Hemby Congo. Likisi Matola was on drums. Also in the band was Omary Mgogo.
